It is unfortunate that on the majority of my photography trips to some of the best waves in the world I am unable to surf. Already loaded up with over two hundred pounds of camera gear, luggin along a surfboard is simply not an option. However, since I drove to this location I decided to bring a few boards. When I had a break from shooting I paddled out at this grinding right hander. The take off zone is rather tricky here as it is literally about ten feet from a razor sharp barnacle-covered rock ledge. As I dropped in on my first wave the wind and water pelted me in the eyes, blinding me, and I was forced over the falls. I proceeded to be dragged over the sharp rocks as they mangled my board and body. After the beating had ceased I sat on the beach examining my destroyed board and multiple gashes. I shot this one last image and decided to call it a day.

Big Rock is one of my favorite waves in California to shoot. Not only because it is conveniently only three blocks from my house, but also because on the right day it is one of the most powerful waves in San Diego. Even on smaller days like the one here, a surfer can go out and get the best barrel of his life. Although, that may require experiencing one of the worst beatings of his life during the same session.

This particular image was captured on December 10th, 2006 at San Diego's Black's Beach. It was a warm Santa Ana day in Southern California and there was a healthy west swell in the water. Typically, large west swells are not favorable for many San Diego surf spots. However, due to a large underwater canyon just off the beach at Black's, beautiful left hand bombs were funneling in at south peak. I got caught inside on a few of the bigger sets this day while swimming. The beatings were plentiful but the rewards were well worth it.

There are few places in San Diego as beautiful as La Jolla's Blacks Beach at dusk on a clear day. The cliffs that hug the shoreline act as a giant gold reflector bouncing light back into the waves. Nature's studio at it's best.

As surfers walk down the road leading to Black's the feeling of anticipation grows high. That first view of the ocean gives you not only an idea of what the wind is doing at the moment but also an indicator of the swell size. Typically, it is safe to say that the waves are nearly twice as big as those that can be seen from the walk down. So when one sees a surfer dropping in on an oily eight foot wave from the road, chances are they are in for a huge treat when they get to the bottom. If you've ever waked down that road you will know that this is a true Black's greeting.

This image was captured at Black Beach in La Jolla, California. It was a magnificently clear day and the sun was getting too low to produce enough light for me to stop the action. I slowed down the exposure long enough to show the motion of the wave while still maintaining the beauty of backlight. This is definitely one of my favorite images.

On a typical Black's day it is not uncommon to find well over a hundred surfers in the lineup. However, when the waves exceed a certain height, the lineup thins out significantly. This day was perhaps one of the best days of the year. Double overhead plus sets hitting the sandbars perfectly without a whisp of wind on it. Seven surfers had the North peak all to themselves. The crowd thinned to six after this set as the unfortunate surfer on the inside snapped his board. As he walked up the beach with a half of his board under each arm I could only imagine what he was thinking to himself. 'Why didn't I bring down two boards?'

This image was captured on the North Shore of Oahu. The waves were large this day and were reforming onto the inside near the beach. Even though this wave is only about ten feet high, nothing compared to what was breaking on the outside, it still gives one the feeling of Hawaii's powerful surf.

During a vacation to Bali in September of 2007 I stopped along the cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula to grab this image of a newly arriving swell marching in. The Bukit is renowned for it's numerous left hand setups. When swell like this arrives it's no wonder that many surfers call this place heaven on earth.

The Dominican Republic's Amber Coast is truly a surfer's hidden paradise. I spent ten days there during the month of January on a shoot for Surfer Magazine. This particular image was taken at one of the many empty beach breaks I came upon. 80 degree water, 80 degree air and nobody in site. Truly a paradise found.

Cave is definitly one of the heaviest waves I have come across in my travels. Located on the outskirts of Ericeira, Cave (pronounced 'Cov') is Portugal's own version of The Box in Western Australia. The waves come out of deep water and absolutely unfolds onto a razor sharp reef in only a few feet of water. I only saw a few people surfing this wave during my time in Portugal but none on the day this image was taken.

While on a shoot in Costa Rica I spent my mornings drinking extremely strong coffee as the sun came up. There happened to be several poison dart frogs bouncing around the property I was staying on. These frogs secrete a deadly poison on their back which is a concentration of the toxins found in the insects they eat. Moments after shooting this photo one of the frogs jumped on my bare foot. I instinctively did the unthinkable and sent the poor frog sailing into the jungle with the jolt of my foot. I think the coffee in Central America might be a tinge too strong for me.

Portugal is riddled with perfect points and bodyboarders. Among the most popular points is Coxos. Coincidentally, this is one of the only setups in Portugal without a single bodyboarder in sight. I can only assume that the surfers in this area covet Coxos to the point which they have made it somewhat of a "surfers only" wave. It truly is a world class wave on certain days but you gotta stand up if you want to surf there without getting grief.

While on Oahu back in 2004 I spent an afternoon on the East side looking for something a little different to shoot other than surfers and waves. I found a little beach with hundreds of crabs running back and forth from one hole to another. I positioned myself outside of an occupied hole in the sand and waited...and waited...and waited. Until finally this little fellow inched his way out to investigate. It paused for a moment and eyeballed me as if to say, "Ok buddy. Get the shot and move on please so I can run around to other holes." I clicked off only a couple shots before the camera shy critter scurried off.

La Jolla's Windansea shack is, to many people I know, not only an icon of the community, but also of surfing's culture and history. Many of the worlds best surfers have relaxed under this same shack after a surf and talked story. On this early rainy September morning in 2005 I sat in the bed of my truck and shot for about an hour under the camper shell. There were a couple people underneath the shack listening to Bob Marley and enjoying the storm.

This image was taken at La Jolla surf spot, Horseshoe. This wave is one of the closest things we have to real Hawaiian power here in San Diego. En Fuego was taken on a strong Santa Ana day in Southern California's Imperial Beach. When I arrived in the morning the waves were rather small and the wind was gusting over twenty-five miles per hour. I decided to wait for the tide change in hopes the waves would show a bit more sign of life. About an hour later the swell really started filtering in, as did the wind. Now blowing at a steady thirty miles per hour with stronger gust, I shot a series of lineups literally two miles from the Tijuana bullring. A fire had broke out in the hills above the bullring and was spreading fast, as is common with this type of dry forceful wind. As the smoke from the fire filled the sky, I captured this final image of a perfectly groomed empty left hander marching to shore.

In 2006 I did a three day full tactical mission 500 miles down Baja in hopes of scoring a particular right hand point. Upon arriving in the evening I was greeted with howling offshore winds up to 30mph. After spending close to an hour trying to set up a tent in the frigid sandblast I opted for a motel room. When I awoke the next morning my eyes were crusted from all the dirt blowing around the night before. When I walked down to the beach to find spitting six foot barrels groomed to perfection my eyes had no problem staying open.

Seabirds synchronize their movement with the incoming waves in hopes of finding a feast of small crabs beneath the sands surface. As the waves come in, the birds run back toward safe ground. As the waves recede, the birds once again return to dig up their buried treasure. This interaction with ocean and animal has always fascinated me.

There is only one thing better than seeing a perfect right hand tube spinning across a sand bottom point. This would be an empty perfect right hand tube spinning across a sand bottom point. Just in the time it takes you to read this paragraph, I can assure you that there are thousands of these unridden gems breaking at different places in the world. This image is just a reminder to me of that fact. It actually makes me want to buy a plane ticket to one of those places right now.

I spent a month in Europe in the Fall of 2006. I have to be honest, of all the places I traveled there, France was probably near the bottom of the list of personal favorites. It was expensive, it rained ninety percent of the time and my diet consisted primarily of bread, cheese and ham. However, when waves like this find there way to Anglet, there's no denying that there are some amazing things about France, even if they are imported.

I was shooting some surfers at Rocky Point this day. The conditions were absolutely immaculate. There were probably close to fifty surfers out at Rocky's this day. Just down the beach, not forty yards away, was a kid surfing Gas Chambers by himself. I'm still confused at why more people didn't paddle down to join him. My guess would be that the lone surfer wasn't too worried about it.

Often time when I am shooting on the beach with a large lens mounted to a tripod I look around for interesting colors or objects close to me that might make for a unique shot. The sunset was brilliant the evening that I took this image. Sometimes the most interesting things are right in front of us and often go unnoticed.

I have no idea who this surfer is.As I was shooting some professionals one evening on Oahu I notices this surfer drawing the most smooth turns I had seen all winter. He didn't have a large repertoire of tricks up his sleeve. However, each turn he did was drawn perfectly. I slowed down the shutter on this one to emphasize the beauty of the motion.

This image was captured while flying in a seaplane to a remote island in Northern Fiji. I have always found interest inscenics from above 10,000 feet. The world seems to take on a completely different look from this perspective. This particular composition shows the intricate detail of the Great Sea Reef. As the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Great Sea Reef spans across the Northern coast of Venua Levu and is renound for having some of the best diving in the world. All one needs is a parachute and a mask.

Green Almond was captured while on a trip to Southern Nicaragua in July of 2008. The water color in this area of Central America is much more green than neighboring Costa Rica to the south. The sunset this evening offered beautiful color contrast to the lingering storm which would arrive that night. As the light filtered through the backs of these almond barrels, a kaleidoscopic display of green luminance filled their interior.

The Point at Mainland Mexico's Puerto Escondido. It was small this day but the inside was spinning perfect shoulder high barrels. Taken during the middle of a cloudy day, I used a gel filter on the lens to give it a little more color interest.

When I first heard the word madrugada I imagined a creature from Mexican folklore. Maybe the sister of the Chupa Cabra. I then learned that madrugada simply means "the dawn". This image was catured in central Mexico during the last week of Winter. For myself, this image expresses the dawn of Spring.

This image was taken from the backyard of the house I was staying at while I was in Oahu in December of 2005. I was there during the most crowded times of the year for surfers. Yet, Log Cabins seemed to handle the influx of traveling surfers without a problem. While sloughs of ambitious professionals were jockeying for waves at Pipeline 200 yards down the beach, two friends shared a fun five foot session together by themselves. I imagine they're still bragging about that evening.

I stepped outside of my hotel in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico one morning with the intention of shooting some scenics. Finding this group of manta rays playing in the surf really caught me by surprise. I had seen dolphins playing in the waves thousands of times before. Never had I seen rays catch waves in a group like this as though they were all having fun together.

Although it appears to look like the middle of the day, this was a beautiful full moon night on Oahu's NorthShore. The light from the moon illuminated the clouds, sand and waves tumbling over the rocks in the foreground. I think that my favorite thing about this image is the stars scattered behind the Looney Toonesque clouds.

I had been trying to capture a full moonrise in San Diego for quite some time. When I was driving to my shooting site this night I thought to myself how perfect this particular day was going to be for finally achieving my image. Moments after I set up my tripod for this shot the clouds rolled in over the city. I had planned on capturing a perfectly clear moonrise and was a bit distraught about the clouds. However, as I began shooting the cityscape I realized that the clouds gave the image a more unique feel and added balance to the whole image.

While driving across Kansas I came upon the most intense lightning storm I'd ever seen. I stopped for about an hour and shot images of it from it's perimeter. After the shoot I had to drive through it. That was one of the craziest experiences I've had in my life. Sheets of rain, lightning as bright as daylight every second and 80+ mph wind blowing across the highway. I thought I was going to OZ for sure.

Pacific Beach was bombarded with lightning during a September 2005 storm. I exposed this image for over a minute which cause the colors in the sky to shift. The lights from PB created what is called "light pollution" which renders interesting result at times.

Padang Padang is one of Bali's and the world’s most famous breaks. It was a magnificent evening in the Dominican Republic. I was shooting some professional surfers graced with vividly warm front light coming from the west. The lunar phase plays a large roll in tidal fluctuations. Typically, there is a greater range of high and low tides during a full moon. I captured this image while on a trip to Southern Baja during a full moon. As the moon came up the tide pushed in helping create this interesting composition and relation between moon, wave and tide. A longer exposure gave this image a soft feel as well as a sense of this tidal push.

One of the sacrifices of being a dedicated surf photographer is having to leave the board at home when the light and conditions are perfect for shooting. As I stood behind my lens on Mt. Soledad this particular morning I was not only impressed by the perfect A-frames coming through at the pier but also the will power it took to watch from a distance. One great thing about Central Portugal is that, assuming there are waves, there is almost always somewhere offshore. This became clear on a day trip I took to Peniche. The peninsula of Peniche protrudes off the West coast so that if the wind is out of the North, Supertubes is sure to be fun. If the wind is out of the South, one can drive five minute to the other side and surf more perfect offshore sandbars.This evening the sun was getting low and really glowing through the backs of these Supertubes gems.

There are many pinnacle experiences that a surfer has from taking part in a sport that fortifies one's connection with nature. From that first drop-in to the first barrel ride, these experiences are what draw surfers back to the ocean. In my experience as a surfer there is one thing that I love to do and it doesn't even involve riding the wave. As I'm paddling out on a beautiful backlit day I like to pause for a moment as I duckdive and watch the beauty of the waves as they throw over me. Time seems to stand still for that moment and the beauty of the wave reveals itself for the last time before crumbling to shore. This image reminds me of that moment of the last look.

The neighborhood above Black’s Beach in La Jolla is one of the most affluent in all of San Diego and possibly the United States. When I’m in the water looking back up at the enormous homes on the cliff there is one mansion that always strikes my curiosity. Who owns it? What kind of life has this person lived to achieve such wealth? More importantly though, does this person understand the value surfers place on the beach directly beneath the estate? Or is it simply considered a nice view from seven of their twelve bedrooms? One thing is certain though. Mansions are the last thing on a surfer’s mind the moment they’ve dropped in on a beautifully backlit overhead wave at Black’s. Life is good.

I’m dedicating this image to a friend of mine whom I shared a fale with in Samoa a few years back. We had just fallen asleep after a mouth numbing night of Kava chugging when my friend jumped out of his bed screaming every word in the book, and I'm not referring to the good book. The six-inch centipede that crawled across his back was sufficient to promote such a reaction from anyone. We spent a good hour tearing the room apart looking for the creepy crawler but never found it. As centipedes are among my least favorite of earth's creatures, I couldn't help but spend the remaining four nights of our trip completely mummified in my sheets, head and all.

The surf in Hawaii has a tendency to either get too big or too small in my experience. While there are plenty of perfect days, there are also many days when I find myself looking for something a little less ordinary to shoot. During one of the "too small" days I came across these perfect crystal clear green waves near Rocky Point. I shot close to a hundred images of them and only one really stood out. This little gem.

Turtle Bay #1

The wind was out of control on the entire North Shore this day. Thinking the day was a wash, I decided to meet up with a friend for a couple Mai Tais at the Turtle Bay Hilton. To my surprise, the bay in front of the pool area was completely protected from the wind. The waves were small but I snapped a few images during the sunset. Did I mention how good the Mai Tais were there?

I knew that a clean swell was to be filtering into Southern California the night before I took this image. It was a brisk November morning when I made my way up to Cardiff before sunrise. Only a few surfers had paddled out. It is rare to see a wave at Cardiff Reef go by unridden on days like this. Dozens came through this morning with untracked faces.

It's extremely rare to see Pipeline without dozens of surfers on it. Especially when it's this good. I shot this image during the Pipe Masters contest this year. Only four surfers in the water. One can only imagine how good it was this day when waves like this go by unridden.

We’ve all experienced them at some point in our lives. The folks next door who are up all night and day having a good time. Most of the time you just wish they would give you some peace. Occasionally though, you wish you could just forget responsibility and join them in the fun. When I captured this image I couldn’t help but to conjure the scenario of peering over the backyard fence into the neighbor’s yard with just a little envy. Man, that Black’s family sure knows how to have a good time.
